I headed over to The Orchard Theatre last night to see The Play That Goes Wrong, little did I know that I would leave the theatre that evening exhausted, with mascara running down my face and a belly ache from laughing so hard. How can something so wrong be so right?!
The Play That Goes Wrong follows Cornley Drama Society as they attempt to stage a 1920's murder mystery, and somehow, despite all odds they make it through a disastrous, accident-prone, chaotic and hilarious show to their final curtain call. Absolutely full to the brim with comedy, this play combines farce, physical theatre, exceptional comic timing, ingenious direction and performances and a jaw-dropping set.
Never before have I sat in an audience and cried with uncontrollable laughter, surrounded by hundreds of other audience goers doing exactly the same. At points, I didn't think I would ever catch my breathe as disaster after disaster played out on the stage, with the actors pulling out every possible ounce of comedy to be found.
It would be remiss to single out any one specific performance from this play, it is very much an ensemble piece with every cast member (and crew!) bringing a whole heap to the table. Strong and hilarious characters, in regards to both talent and physical strength, perfected physical comedy, hilarious one liners and the audience eating out of the palm of their hands. I was shocked, confused and delighted in equal measure!
Mischief Theatre has a great reputation for producing hilarious work, I was surprised the audience wasn't sold out, but it absolutely should be. The laughter will be ringing in my ears for days, and I would recommend everyone to go and see it, it truly is a masterpiece!!!!
The Play That Goes Wrong is on at The Orchard Theatre from Tuesday 21st - Sunday 26th September 2021.
