Producers Jason Donavan and Jonathan Russell took to the stage of the Orchard Theatre, Dartford to present their UK Tour of Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical.
Having performed in PRISCILLA for a contract spanning four years, Donavan is back, but this time in a very different role, taking on the reigns as a Producer. He told the assembled press and audience members that this show is very close to his heart, and it was a very easy decision to come on board as one of the Producers.
I asked him, "What are the biggest challenges you face when producing a show?"
He said,
"Finding the money! The rest I find pretty easy, but, I think that producing needs to start with a show or piece of work that you really love yourself, and that is the case with Priscilla." - Jason Donavan
Jonathan Russell reiterated,
"This is true. The journeys that I've been on as a Producer, if you don't go into that project with something you really care for and have an affinity for, knowing how long that journey is to bring a piece to fruition, then, you're not on the right foot to start with...the reason we do the shows we do, in our office, is because we really want to present them, and we love them, and want an audience to also have a chance to enjoy them." - Jonathan Russell
This tour of Priscilla boasts a new Director (Paul Kerryson), Choreographer (Tom Jackson - Greaves), and of course, cast.
However, we are reassured that the exuberance, drag, performance and spectacle will all still be there, along with the very essence of the show we all know and love; heart. It is ultimately a story of love and family and this message is at the core of this tour.
The lead role of "Tick" will be played by Joe McFadden, who is no stranger to Musical Theatre, having performed in RENT, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Rainbow Kiss, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying... amongst others, as well as having a long list of television credits including, Strictly Come Dancing, Holby City, Casuality... to name a few.
Jason Donavan was actively involved in the auditions for Priscilla, and even read for the auditionees.
He said of McFadden's casting,
"Not only does he have the credentials, but he has heart, and this was very important to me."
PRISCILLIA is kicking off their UK Tour at The Orchard Theatre, Dartford 5th September - 14th September 2019.
